Wordle

Here's a word cloud of my paper I just defended. The paper is called "Quantifier Expressions and Quinian Metaontology". Willard van Orman Quine was a bigshot Harvard philosopher for a large part of the 20th Century. Quinian metaontology is his views about the language and practice of ontology (ontology is a group of questions about what things exist). Quantifier expressions are things like "some", "most", "there are", "there exist", and so on. This paper was mostly my argument for why I think "there are" and "there exists" are not synonymous (and also why that might matter). The word cloud was made at http://www.wordle.net/

Outlander + Karoke

Have you guys heard of this? A movie about space vikings! It looks like it'll have a very small release, so it might be one that has to wait till dvd.

On an unrelated note, I haven't put much stuff up here lately because of a paper I've been working on. I've been frantically trying to get it done, so the only internetting I've been doing is playing travian between writing paragraphs. But yesterday I defended that paper in front of my committee, and it passed, so now I'm done with that. Now it's on to working on a dissertation proposal, and then the dissertation. In celebration, we went to the Vegas Lounge and did some karoke. Kelsi did this song:

I played Chevy Chase and danced around behind her, joining in on some of her choreographed moves. Then, right after her, I followed it up with my rendition of this:

Her-Hulk the Sceptical

"She's Like the Wind" (P. Swayze/ S. Widelitz)

She's like the wind through my tree
She rides the night next to me
She leads me through moonlight
Only to burn me with the sun
She's taken my heart
But she doesn't know what she's done

Feel her breath on my face
Her body close to me
Can't look in her eyes
She's out of my league
Just a fool to believe
I have anything she needs

(Just a fool...)
(She's like the wind)
(Just a fool...)
(She's like the wind)
(Just a fool...)

Let The Right One In

This is a really great movie. Kelsi and I went to it the other night. I don't know if Swedish vampire flicks ever make it to the Fargo Theater, but if this one does, you should definitely go. Or get on Netflix or something. I guess the guy who directed Cloverfield is making a US remake of this, but I can't imagine it being as good.

Fever Ray (The Knife's Karin Dreijer): "If I Had a Heart"

Pitchfork posted this today and I figured you all would dig it as much as I did. Enjoy.

I Wish That I Could See You Soon

Overall, I wouldn't say that "Next Year in Zion" by Herman Dune is a great album. But, to be honest, I didn't listen to a lot of new albums in 2008. And there are a couple pretty great songs on this one, like the title track and "Try To Think About Me (Don't You Worry A Bit)". I scanned through the Top 50 at pitchfork to see if there were any albums that I've enjoyed but just forgot about (or forgot they were 2008 albums), but that just depressed me, since it made me realize how little new stuff I've heard this year. I haven't even gotten around to picking up Kimya Dawson's "Alphabutt" yet, which I'm guessing would probably have been my favorite.
